What counts as a good station?

A station is simply a safe, comfortable place your cat can choose to approach. A nonslip mat, low stool or stable cat perch can work. It should never block an exit, trap the cat, or sit directly beside a frightening household activity.

Teach the destination before adding a cue

Let the cat discover the station before saying a word.

  1. Reward a glance or step toward the station.
  2. Mark and reward the first voluntary step onto it.
  3. Repeat until the cat comfortably approaches without being lured every time.
  4. Add a short verbal cue only when the action is predictable.
  5. Gradually reward relaxed pauses, then release the cat freely.

Use the skill in a real routine

Try stationing while you prepare a non-stressful activity, such as setting up the next toy. Begin without visitors or loud appliances. Add distraction only when your cat succeeds calmly at the easy level. Never use a station to make a frightened cat remain exposed.

What to do when the cat leaves

Allow it. Leaving is feedback that duration, distraction or motivation needs adjustment. At the next session, shorten the expected pause or choose a more rewarding position rather than directing the cat back repeatedly.

Useful moments for station training

Think of stationing as offering a comfortable option, not making your cat sit still for every household event.

Useful exampleWhat not to expect
Waiting on a mat while you prepare a toyRemaining there while a frightening noise continues.
Voluntarily moving to a perch before a short lessonHolding still to be touched or restrained without consent.
Choosing a familiar resting spot when guests arriveReplacing a safe hiding area or a closed door when needed.
Is station training just another word for stay?

No. It begins with choosing a destination; longer duration is added after the cat finds that location rewarding.
