Set up a safe practice space

Choose one body area your cat already tolerates and prepare a preferred reward.

Put the equipment away when the cat is not participating, and choose a time without visitors or loud activity. Practice should feel predictable, never like a surprise procedure.

Build comfort in four small steps

1
Reward calmly approaching the practice mat.
2
Touch a shoulder briefly and release.
3
Practice a gentle look toward one paw or ear only if comfortable.
4
End with a reward and let the cat walk away before adding another area next time.

Signs it's time to pause

Do not force a fearful cat through examination drills. Speak with your clinic about fear-free handling options.

Health and safety: Never use force or restraint for practice. Discuss pain, illness or medical procedures with a veterinarian.

Record a comfortable choice

Note which item or touch was introduced, the distance, the duration and whether your cat remained relaxed. Return to the same easy starting point next time. If the cat was unsure, reduce the intensity and allow extra time.

Can training replace a veterinary visit?

No. It may make handling easier but cannot assess health.

Educational guidance, not veterinary diagnosis.
