How to redirect your cat’s scratching

Scratching is a normal part of being a cat. The aim is to give your cat a suitable outlet, rather than stop the behavior altogether.

Start with the surface

Notice whether your cat scratches upright furniture or flat surfaces. Offer a tall, stable post for vertical scratching, or a horizontal pad for a cat that prefers the floor. A post should let your cat stretch without wobbling.

Put it where it matters

Place the scratcher beside the furniture your cat already uses. A second option near a resting spot can also help. Protect the furniture while your cat learns where to scratch.

Encourage the right choice

Praise your cat when they use the scratcher. Once they use it consistently, move it gradually if needed. Keep observing their preferred position and material rather than replacing everything at once.

Your next step

Write down where scratching happens and which scratcher your cat chooses. Share those details with our Meawys trainers for help refining the setup.
